The Ugly Side of Beauty - beauty pageants

I remember when i first fell in love, i was watching 'Miss Congeniality' and i thought wow. Even though the movie was not all about the pageants but that little insight made me go wow. Fast forward 10 years and you find not only young adult pageants but pageants for all ages.

The popularity has led to many documentaries and also TV shows following the beauties such as 'Toddlers and Tiara's'. With more coverage it has led to more anger towards the competitions especially to the younger entries.

Child pageants has contestants aged up to 18 years old. There are two types glitz and natural - glitz being the more make-up one.  categories may include talentinterviewsportswear, casual wear, swim wear and also theme wear.

In Glitz pageants,  Big hair (including fake hair), flawless makeup, spray tans, flippers (fake teeth) and nail extensions are expected of contestants with routines such as 'sassy walk'. Natural pageants have strict rules regarding clothing, makeup, hair extensions, etc. They may forbid any makeup other than non-shiny lipgloss and mascara for girls on stage

Pageants also have been criticized for the sexualization of young children with the use of make-up, bikinis, routines and also how the child is told to act.

However after many of the child have finished their 'performance' the simply go back to being children with nay not allowed to wear make-up outside of pageants.

Pageants can earn thousands of pounds however many will not earn money as the prize money would only just pay for the cost to enter.
